    MINI Check Engine Light

An illuminated check engine light on your Mini indicates a problem has been detected. It can be something simple or a major headache. Not knowing the severity of the problem can be stressful.

When the light is triggered, it is important to have the problem diagnosed right away. At Master’s European and Japanese Auto Repair, our technicians will inspect your Mini and run a diagnostic scan to determine the exact issue.

The Importance of the Check Engine Light

The check engine light is there to warn you when a problem has been detected.

    Steady Light

When the check engine light is constantly lit, your Mini has detected a problem. Call your mechanic as soon as possible to make an appointment.

    Flashing Light

When the engine light is flashing, there is an emergency. Safely pull your car off to the side of the road and turn it off. Call for a tow to a trusted shop. Do not continue to drive your car. Doing so can lead to major, irreparable engine damage.

What triggers the check engine warning light?

Many issues can cause your check engine light to illuminate. The following are the most common reasons:

    • Battery is Failing: When the battery is producing a low voltage, the light can be triggered.
    • Broken or Loose Gas Cap: If your check engine light comes on right after you fill up your gas tank, it could be the gas cap. The cap needs to be airtight so that the gas vapors are not able to escape.
    • Dirty Fuel Injector: When the fuel injector is clogged, there can be a misfire. This will trigger the check engine light.
    • Defective Ignition Coil: If the ignition coils are not firing, your Mini will produce a code that will trigger the check engine light.
    • Faulty MAF Sensor: For the engine to run smoothly, the Mass Air Flow sensor must be functioning properly. The MAF sensor calculates the air to fuel ratio which allows your engine to work efficiently.
    • Spark Plugs are Misfiring: A misfiring spark plug will trigger the light. It is important that you follow your regular maintenance schedule and have the spark plugs replaced accordingly.
    • Bad Spark Plug Wires: The spark plug wires deliver voltage to the spark plugs. A faulty wire will not be able to deliver the appropriate voltage.
    • Failing Catalytic Converter: Over time, the catalytic converter can clog. The catalytic converter is a part of your Mini’s emissions system. It removes toxic carbon monoxide. If there is an issue with the component it can impact the car’s performance and fuel economy.
    • Bad Oxygen Sensor: The oxygen sensor is a vital component that helps determine the air-to-fuel ratio. If it is faulty, your engine may get too much or not enough fuel.
    • Loose or Broken Vacuum Hoses: When there is an issue with the vacuum hose, your Mini will either see a drop or rise in pressure. This change in pressure will trigger the check engine light.

What to do if the Check Engine Light is Triggered in Your Mini

Your check engine light can be triggered by many different issues. A solid light usually means the issue can wait until seen by a shop as soon as possible. If the light is flashing, it means that a major problem has been detected and you should turn off your engine and call for a tow.

    MINI Spark Plug Check

No matter what issue your Mini has detected, it is important that you have it checked out right away. Ignoring the issue can lead to a bigger problem and higher service bills.
